Special Notes

Dirk Dressler, MD, PhD, obtained his medical education at Georg-August University, Goettingen, Friedrich-Alexander University, Erlangen and at Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA. During this time he was scholar of Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation. He is a fully board certified neurologist and psychiatrist. After several years of postgraduate training at the National Hospital for Neurology and the Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, London, UK he took over a position as consultant neurologist and Associate Professor of Neurology at Rostock University, Rostock, Germany. In September 2008 he was appointed Full Professor of Neurology and Head of Movement Disorders Section at the Department of Neurology, Hannover Medical School, Hannover, Germany.

He is one of the pioneers of botulinum toxin therapy in Europe. He published over 700 articles, book chapters and abstracts as well as several books on dystonia, other movement disorders and on botulinum toxin therapy. He is the author with the world-wide largest number of publications on botulinum toxin therapy. He received a honorary professorship of the University of Santiago de Chile, a honorary doctorate of the Medical University of Sofia, Bulgaria, the Symtox Lifetime Award, the Lifetime Award of the Chinese Neurotoxin Society, the Catedra Laboris Teaching Award of the Univerity of Monterrey, Mexico, the Research Award of the Inge Diersbach Stiftung and several other prestiguous awards for his contributions to the development of botulinum toxin therapy. He holds visiting professorships of the universities of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Monterrey, Mexico and of Tongji University, Shanghai, China. He also holds several patents on botulinum toxin therapy.

Dr Dressler is co-founder and co-convenor of the International Congress on Treatment of Dystonia, co-founder of IAB - Interdisciplinary Working Group for Movement Disorders, of International Neurotoxin Association, of International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society Special Interest Group on Spasticity, of Konrad-Adenauer Foundation Health Network, of Fokus Spastik/German Spasticity Forum and editor and reviewer of numerous international neurological journals. He served on the board of directors of We Move, New York, and the advisory boards of the German Dystonia Society, Dystonie und Du, Bundesverband Torticollis, Fundacion Dystonia, Santiago, Chile, Associacao Brasileira de Portadores de Distonias, Sao Paulo, Brazil, the National Spasmodic Torticollis Association, Los Angeles, CA, Swiss Dystonia Society, Basle, Switzerland and Deutsche Seniorenliga, Bonn. He is member of various international medical societies and serves as project reviewer for The Wellcome Trust, London, UK, the National Medical Research Council, Singapore and the Czech Ministry of Health. He is founder and proprietor of the Wittgenstein Organisation. He is co-founder and Member of the Board of Directors of WisperBio, Wilmington, DE. He also works as consultant for various international pharmaceutical companies including Merz Pharmaceuticals, Allergan, Ipsen, Solstice/Eisai, Syntaxin, Medytox and Lanzhou Institute of Biological Products.

During his career from 1985 until 2020 he attended 786 Meetings and gave 625 lectures. As of 01.11.20 he had a RG Score of 48.48, a RG h index of 55, 10482 citations and 46347 reads.

He is married to Dr Fereshte Adib Saberi. He is member of the Reform Club, London and the Anglo-German Club, Hamburg and his hobbies include arts and classic cars collection and off-road motorbiking.
