THIRD INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON TREATMENT OF DYSTONIA

Banner_Treatment-of-Dystonia-2016THIRD INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON TREATMENT OF DYSTONIA ATTRACTED MORE THAN 500 PARTICIPANTS FROM 37 COUNTRIES.

From May 4-7, the third triennial International Congress on Treatment of Dystonia took place in Hannover, Germany. As in the previous congresses, emphasis was laid on novel treatments of all forms of dystonia, including botulinum toxin therapy, deep brain stimulation, various behavioural methods and new emerging strategies to improve or even prevent the development of dystonia.

With a faculty of more than 80 world-leading experts from neurology, neurosurgery, neuropediatrics, neurogenetics, allied health professions and basic sciences and with an audience of more than 500 participants from all continents this was, again, the leading meeting on dystonia. Young scientists had the opportunity to present their work in the poster session and as free oral communications. Representatives from several patient organisations, including Dystonia Europe, were invited to participate.

‘This congress is the central platform and meeting point for all who care for patients with dystonia’ said the organisers Prof. Altenmüller, Prof. Dressler and Prof. Krauss. ‘We are very pleased to see that there is a growing interest in our congress. We all need to develop the field of dystonia further and we all need to attract young people and new topics so that the field will be fit for the future.’

This time, the congress format was expanded by including a new satellite symposium on Dystonia in Sports. The traditional Symposium on Rehabilitation of Dystonia was very well attended marking an increasing interest in rehabilitation. Nine hands-on-workshops and focussed lunch time satellite symposia supplemented the conference and contributed to the vivid exchange of ideas.

Last, but not least, the beautiful spring weather and the social events, including a dinner in the legendary Celle Castle of the House of Hannover (their descendants representing the ruling houses in the UK, Denmark, Spain and the Netherlands) generated an atmosphere of openness and exchange contributing to the success of the congress.

The fourth conference is to come…
